After a quiet weekend back home after Edinburgh, we struggled back to our jobs after a month off. Now at New Year’s I’d gone and done something very unwise, namely make a few resolutions, being: (1) Keep in better touch with people, particularly my little brothers, (2) Stick to a budget, so we have lots of money to spend travelling, (3) I can’t remember, but I remember there being 4, and (4) Join the gym to be more active/healthier.
So that first weekend into Jan I joined the gym. On the Sunday we headed into town on a crisp clear day intending to go on the London Eye, but unluckily it was out of action for the weekend, so we did a tour inside the Tower Bridge instead. Then we headed off to Westfield, and had a wander round. The bit that impressed me the most was the toilets and corridors leading to these fabulous toilets. The manholes in the ceilings and the panels in the loos were a sight to behold as were some areas around the escalators (duh all Ryan’s handy work!). Actually, the toilets were quite impressive, which probably had something to do with the Hagrid sized ceilings, doors and everything. We also caught up with Claire and Hamish for a few Sunday avo/evening bevies. This made getting up on Monday morning more of a struggle than usual!
After struggling through Monday, the week did its thing and all of a sudden it was Friday and I was having after work drinks with the girls at our local. Come the weekend, and we looked at our first camper in north London on the Saturday avo (it was a rust bucket). On the Sunday Ryan did a repeat of the Sunday beers this time with Cookson and I devoted my day to writing my masterpiece of a blog on Egypt, and putting the last of our festive season pictures into albums on Facebook. Blah.
Monday rolled on into Friday again and we had dinner and a few reds to celebrate the end of the week with Dave, Luc and Bego (Spanish flatmate) and Marg’s at Wagamama’s. On Saturday we hired a car (just the standard 5 gears this time L) and headed down to Plymouth for a dirty weekend in a hotel. Jokes! We we're looking at another camper, and making a weekend of it (the camper had water damage). On Sunday we tiki-toured our way back up to London, via Dartmoor, which was wicked. 40mph speed limit so as not to hit any of the sheep wandering the moor and the road that runs through it. Cattle stops every so often, and wide, wide open spaces, all very moor-y. Similar to maybe Desert Plateau or heading into central Otago from Palmerston. All tussocks, and bracken and sheep wandering about, and wild Shetland ponies. Came across some cute-as-a-button thatched roof cottages.
Monday again made its way to Friday, and we had a house party so we could get drunk in the warmth and comfort of our own home! Looked at 4 campers at the weekend, one in London which is a possibility, and three north of London, one of which is high in mileage and too high in price for what it is, one that was a junk bucket with water damage and one that was ok, but smaller than the possibility one, yet the same price. Ryan didn't enjoy the tripping around in the car looking at the campers, as he had an upset tummy from the house party the night before. Something he ate maybe?
We’ve become tired of this working caper; so have booked a long weekend in Copenhagen for the start of March. We’re also in the midst of organising a holiday around a few of the Greek Islands and Athens probably for the middle of May. And are super looking forward to our Anzac trip to Turkey in April! Planning our summer/autumn Europe trip which will be awesome, just need to find a means of transport to facilitate this wonderful adventure! And to date, I’ve maintained my resolution, and am gym-ing it up 3 times a week!
And that brings us to the last month of winter. February. Given that this has been one of the coldest winters in the decade, and February is traditionally the coldest month of winter, there are predictions that this Feb will match the record years, and the average temperature won’t be above 0. Zero. Zero degrees. And the cruelest thing is that the days are getting longer, (its not dark now until almost 4.40pm, an improvement on 3.50pm!) so it tricks you into thinking that winter is on its way out. It started snowing yesterday (Sunday) and snowed all through the night so we woke up to a winter wonderland today. It's still snowing now and its now midday (I'm in the middle of a snow-day - trains don't like snow :( yahoo!)
Come the end of February I’ll let you all know if we’ve survived the London winter, which is renowned for being so cold, grey and generally dreary that it saps your will to live and sends you home after 18 months to avoid another winter!
P.s it hasn't been that bad so far. Preferable to Auckland winters in fact. And the snow has a lot of novelty factor (see our pics on Facebook, particularly our sexually confused snowman/lady - mans All Blacks hat and a necklace!)
